In days, even hours, a lot of them could create things using the computer. No one telling them what to do. It’s amazing!

One day I got a chance to visit a mosque at one of slum areas in South Jakarta. I didn’t teach the kids how to read Quran, because they already have good teachers for that, but I told them my stories. About pursuing my dreams.

They are kids who glad enough to survive day after day. Living side by side with the garbage their parents collect everyday to make a living. All of them didn’t have a dream at all. Or passion. Or anything. I can only see blank stare in their eyes. No burning desire to get whatsoever ahead in their life. They’re afraid to speak their mind. And reluctant to even speak it through writing. I’m very concerned. These are Indonesia’s next generation!

I have a dream for them. That someday they could turn their life around, brought their family with them, out of the slums. Starting with writing and reading. More knowledge, more insights, more sharing, more creativities, would grow these kids.

I started series of public speaking in universities and schools to encourage more young people to write and eventually read. I challenge them to write in several days. Create a book together at Nulisbuku.com. Just be a creator, not only a follower. This project somehow excite them. One of the students at St. Ursula even said that she’s the one who’s going to make the cover of their class book.

Education News: In Brief

Regard By Board Education Centre

The news that more students are choosing to do difficult subjects such as physics, chemistry and maths at A-level, and that university applications for such subjects are up, is heartening. Whether this trend is due to the sterling efforts of the Higher Education Funding Council is not known. But certainly its attempts to foster interest in science, maths and engineering cannot have hurt, and some may have been vital – particularly the expenditure of £100m sustaining these expensive subjects at university level.

Much has been written about the anomaly of young people shunning subjects at A-level and degree-level that will open doors to interesting, financially rewarding careers. Perhaps, finally, the message has got through to parents and teachers that, yes, science and maths may be hard work, but for some students it is what they love doing.

The irony is that the upturn in demand for these subjects has come at a time when the financial system is in meltdown and the stock market has been crashing, so jobs in the City look much less attractive. The argument was that students should opt for science and maths if they were good at them because they would burnish their job prospects and earning capacity. If they couldn't get a job in research they might aim for a well-paid job in the financial sector, number-crunching for an investment bank or a hedge fund. Now that ambition looks threadbare, will young people still want to have a go at maths and sciences?

Repeat offenders

The figures released by the Conservatives on exclusions show short suspensions are being used to clamp down on bad behaviour before it escalates. The Tories say that head teachers' hands are tied and that they are not able to make long-term exclusions. But that conclusion is not borne out by the facts. Although the Labour government initially set targets to reduce the number of permanent exclusions, those were dropped later.

The fact is, head teachers try to avoid exclusions because they are so damaging for the pupil. But it is doubtful whether it is a good thing to give so many disruptive children repeat suspensions. The number suspended 10 times or more in a year doubled between 2004 and 2007. The Tories are right to ask whether this is the best way to tackle bad behaviour.
Quote of the week

"It would be a disgrace if students and their families were made to pay for the bungling carelessness of officials by cutting grants."

Board of Education delays vote on social-studies standards

The Board of Education in Texas postponed the adoption of new standards in March of Social Studies in the state of public schools.
The board had planned on standards of today's vote. But after two days of debate was tmembers not by a long list of modifications mainly to the jury to the more conservative members of the funded work.
The motion was approved unanimously this afternoon.
Prior to this action several preliminary decisions have been reached.
We could put the students of the history of the conservative groups of the 1980s and 1990s study - no similar requirement for liberal groups. Powered by board member Don McLeroy, R-College Station, the provision states that students should learn about "organizations and key people in the conservative resurgence," including Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly.
This provision was approved on a 7-6 was presented to the Board with the conservative bloc all but one of the affirmative votes.
However, close to other voices in this week, the conservative bloc was too short.
She tries again and again, schools have a greater emphasis on the role of religion in American history and meaning of Christian holidays, including Christmas.
Among the proposals was gunned down Thursday a request to the textbooks, "revivals" among the major upcoming events are the American Revolution.
Only members of the conservative bloc clear - all Republicans - supported the idea, while other Republicans and Democrats have decided to stay with the recommendation of Texas teachers and academics on the subject.
The Council has proposed changes that the scores of social studies curriculum, specifying what students should be history, politics, geography and other classes are taught by elementary school through high school.
Much of the discussion of historical figures involved in the classes of history books and should be covered.
Among those dropped from the old primary school curriculum San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros were, Delores Huerta, the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez co-founded and Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, the first woman governor of Texas.
The board included Raul Gonzalez, the first Hispanic elected to the Supreme Court of Texas, former U. S. Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez and Lorenzo de Zavala, vice president of the Republic of Texas.
Hispanic leaders had earlier, that only 16 of 162 historical figures were noted in the proposed program standards listed Hispanic.
Board member Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, proposed an amendment to require that fifth graders learn the capitals of all 50 states.
Geraldine Miller, R-Dallas, supports the idea and said, ". This is something that all students should know "A majority voted for the add request.
Social studies standards in place to stay for a decade dictate, who taught in government, history and other social studies classes in the state of public elementary and secondary schools.
The rules must be developed for national tests.
And because Texas buys so many schools of textbooks that could affect the accounting standards of Texas, where publishers of books available in other states.

Best Los Angeles Schools

Los Angeles schools announced the results of the 2004-2005 school year, state-mandated California High School Exit Exam. Of the students slated to graduate in 2006, 69 percent (more than two thirds) of the class passed both the English language arts and the mathematics portions of the exam. Of the remaining 31 percent of the Class of 2006 students (12th graders):

Fifteen percent (approximately 5,500 students must pass both the English language arts and the mathematics portions,

Ten percent (3,700) must pass the mathematics portion, and

Six percent (2,000) must pass the English language arts portion.

State law now requires all students to pass both portions of the exit exam in order to graduate from high school and receive a diploma. Students begin taking the exam in the spring of their 10th grade year. If they do not pass one or both portions of the exam, they have the opportunity to retest in both 11th and 12th grades. Los Angeles schools’ Class of 2006 was the first graduating class required to pass both portions of the exam in order to graduate.

The excellent results of the 2004-5 testing is the direct result of focused instruction and successful intervention, and demonstrates that every student is capable of passing the exam. These intense efforts on the part of Los Angeles schools educators were specifically designed to assist students with coursework directly connected to the exit exams.

In the 2004-5 school year, Los Angeles schools developed intervention strategies for students having problems passing the exam. The strategies introduced small learning communities and supported the core curriculum. Personalized teaching and learning approaches were developed for each student, such as an outreach program and intervention on an individual basis. The Los Angeles schools further made attendance at exit exam preparation classes mandatory for students who had yet to pass one or both test portions. These classes met outside of the normal school day and were provided free of charge to the students through the district’s Beyond the Bell, a branch of Los Angeles schools that oversees all student extended day programs.

These combined efforts have had a direct and significant impact upon the graduation rate at Los Angeles schools, as proven not only by the Class of 2006 test results but those for the Class of 2007, as well. When the Class of 2006 was in 10th grade, the students had a first-time pass rate of 60 percent in English language arts and 58 percent in mathematics. The Class of 2007, when in 10th grade, surpassed these first-time pass results by 66 percent in English language arts and 59 percent in mathematics — a significant increase in scholastic achievement.

These results clearly demonstrate that the dropout rate can be turned around, which is just one of the many student achievement goals of Los Angeles schools. The district continues to aggressively focus upon the development of rigorous curriculum for its middle and senior high schools. Los Angeles schools recognize and the exit exam results underscore the importance of improved high school instruction, which can directly impact higher graduation rates and allow students to matriculate and move on to viable options in their adult lives.

Regard By Board Education Centre

Five Preschool Activities For Grandparents Day

As with most holidays, school will use Grandparents Day as a special activity for the class. This can be especially true of preschool, where there is as much focus on social activity and every day life as there is on learning the functionalities of reading, writing, and arithmetic. However, with so many different holidays to plan activities and crafts for, you may be out of ideas for Grandparents Day. Have no fear; there is always something new and different to try.

If your preschool has a high level of parental involvement, you may have your preschoolers create family trees. While these don’t have to be long and detailed, they can trace the immediate family and the grandparents. It can also be made creative, actually drawing a tree with branches that reach to each family member.

You can also have to your students create Grandparents Day “gift bags”. Make the bag as much a part of the gift as what it contains by having your students color paper lunch bags. Then, fill it with a hand-crafted greeting card for the holiday and perhaps things like a colored picture or a couple of pieces of candy.

1 fun idea, if you have the time and patiences, is to have the children put on a show. They could act out a scene depicting children showing respect and thanks to the elderly or even sing to their grandparents. Having these respected members of society visit the classroom could be a very special event and could make the elderly feel useful. At the same time, perhaps the children’s grandparents could visit and tell stories from their youth, read books, or even just answer questions about the “olden days”.

With signed permission slips, you may plan a field trip to a nursing home, where the children can greet the lonely elderly and wish them a happy Grandparents Day at a time when there is no one else to bring such a pleasant message to their lives.

The Philadelphia Schools

Philadelphia Schools has a “just say no” policy, when it comes to school bullies and other related negative student behavior.

Approximately, two thirds of all deaths among children and adolescents in the United States are the result of injury-related causes. These include motor vehicle crashes, unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 126 students committed a school-associated homicide or suicide between 1994 and 1999. Of these students, 28 committed suicide, of which eight intentionally injured others immediately before killing themselves. None of these students were involved in gangs.

The suicides, now referred to as “bullycide”, were attributed to school-associated violence, including bullying and other such social stressors. Though the 126 students may seem small for a national statistic, this is only the tip of the iceberg. It does not address the number of students who develop substance abuse and psychological problems due to being bullied and harassed at school — some for many years from elementary through high school by the same individual(s).

“Pediatrics”, Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, reported in its May 5, 2004, issue that the rise of obesity and overweight in school-aged children is associated with “many negative social and psychological ramifications.” Peer aggression is at the top of the list.

To work toward eliminating this rising national problem in their schools, Philadelphia schools developed a policy that prohibits anyone from bullying or seriously threatening any member of the school community during school hours and coming to and from school. This includes:

•           Repeated threats;

•           Threats of bodily injury;

•           Physical or psychological intimidation;

•           Extortion of any type;

•           Fighting or other acts/threats of violence;

Besides school personnel, Philadelphia schools have enlisted the help of the students and their parents. They have set up a Bully Hotline that is staffed 24 hours a day for students or parents to report school-related abuse. The hotline serves over 175 languages through a telephonic interpretation service. Philadelphia schools promise to act on a reported problem within 24 hours of receiving the hotline complaint. For some issues, callers may receive a follow-up telephone call to ensure the situations were satisfactorily resolved.

Philadelphia schools created flyers in nine different languages that describe the school policy against these negative behaviors, the Bully Hotline, and instructions for non-English language individuals to access the hotline. The eight non-English languages are the most frequently encountered in Philadelphia schools and represent over 85 percent of their “English as a Second Language” students.

The flyers were sent to the parents of students enrolled in their schools. Additionally, they asked parents and community groups to further distribute the flyers throughout the city.

Philadelphia schools are truly concerned about the safety and well-being of its students. They believe that all students have a right not to be bullied or harassed. With their “no bully” policy and the hotline, they are well on their way to prevent, address and eliminate intimidation and harassment of any student for any reason.
